Instill a Love of Math
Because many students tend to struggle with math, they may not love the subject, to say the least. There are, however, many things you can do to turn this around. Use these tips to encourage a love of math at home.
Make Math Real
Many students struggle to understand why math is so necessary. The truth of the matter is we need math daily, even if we don't notice it. While your child may not need to measure angles to get through life successfully, help them see that math makes life easier. Point out how you use math on a daily basis, from weighing produce at the grocery store to budgeting for Christmas gifts. Once they see how you use numbers daily, they may start to understand their need for it.
Play Math Games at Home
Math doesn't have to be boring, it can actually be a lot of fun. There are plenty of games that involve math, your child just may not realize it at first. Host a family game night that includes boardgames that involve math. Most games involve counting in some way, so it won't be hard to find something fun. You can also encourage your child to play math games on their tablet while they wait in line at the grocery store, during long car rides, or while running other errands.
Stay Positive When Talking About Math
Staying positive when dealing with math will help your child have a better relationship with the subject. Saying things like, "I'm not a math person," will only indicate that it's ok for them to give up on math because they aren't good at it. Instead, do your best to help your child when they need it and teach them to appreciate the math skills they have.
