Use the Summer to Prepare for College Applications
If your child is planning to apply to college this school year, make the most of their summer break by preparing for college applications before their deadlines arrive. Use these tips to ensure your child is prepared to impress admissions offices and get into their dream school.
Show off Achievements
When filling out college applications, remind your child that this is not the place to be humble. This is their time to shine and ensure that admissions officers understand how great they really are. Most applications will ask that your child include some of their achievements and awards as well as extracurricular activities and leadership positions. This is where your child gets to show off their accomplishments, leadership skills, and passions. Don't let them be shy about letting their true character come through.
Make a Short List of Potential Schools
It can be hard for students to pick a few schools to apply to because there are so many great choices. However, it's best to stick to a manageable number of universities because deadlines for test scores, transcripts, personal statements, etc. can get overwhelming. Help your child narrow down their choices with some of these questions:
- How close to home do you want to be?
- Do you want to attend a small school or a large school?
- Do you prefer to live in a city, suburb, or small town?
- How important is Greek life?
- What values are you looking for?
- What do you want to major in and what schools are the best in that area?
Ask for Help and Advice
Getting everything together and sent in on time can be tough, especially if you don't understand some of the requirements. Remember that there is no shame in asking for help. You can always contact your child's school counselor for tips or you can even contact the schools your child is applying to in order to get your questions answered. Your child can also get great advice from older friends who are currently in college.
